FAQ & Terms and Conditions

1. What is #dotdot?

#dotdot is a marketplace for the anonymous and secure sharing of unused mobile gigabytes of Internet access, directly between users.

2. How does #dotdot work?

#dotdot works thanks to a small WIFI repeater called a « #dot », which is paired with the internet access point or hotspot phone of the person sharing. An account must be created on the #dotdot app to perform this pairing: the #dot then creates, within a 100-meter radius of the transmitter, a 2.4 GHz WiFi that appears with SSID (name) « #dotdot » in the WiFi settings of any smartphone within range. Without knowing who shares their GBs, anyone with a validated account on the #dotdot app can connect to this #dotdot network in return for a transaction, free or paid – at the choice of the person sharing – carried out in the app.

3. Do I need to buy a #dot device to use #dotdot?

Yes, if you’re more of a « #doter » and want to share your unused Gigas.

No, if you’re more of a « dotee » and want to access the Internet without any constraints, paying only for the GB’s you actually use, on demand.

4. It's like "connection sharing ++": why do I need the #dot? Why not a "simple" app without a box?

Yes, the #dot puts your connection sharing on steroids! It makes it:
  • Anonymous: you don’t have to share your connection password, #dotees connect via the app.
  • Monetizable: you can sell GB’s of mobile Internet access to your #dotees
  • Long range: a #dot has a range of up to 100 meters in open area, ie 3 to 4x more than conventional connection sharing.

We’ve all dreamt of it, but unfortunately it’s technically impossible to get these features from an application alone, without an external device.

5. What advantages does #dotdot offer?

For a #doter, #dotdot enables you to share GB’s that would be wasted at the end of the month otherwise. If these GB’s are sold, they reduce the cost of a #doter’s mobile subscription.

For the #dotee user, #dotdot enables you to contain your mobile Internet access budget to what’s strictly necessary, without the pressure of a subscription that you never use up completely, or the pressure of knowing « how many GB’s you’re going to need » – in other words, an « on-demand » offer that doesn’t exist on the mobile Internet market today.

6. I am a #doter: can I set the selling price of my GBs?

No, the selling price of shared GB’s is fixed at 1 Euro per Giga in France, and this price cannot be changed in the application for the moment.

However, each #doter can choose to share GB’s free of charge: an option in the app lets you make this decision. In all cases, the quantity of GB’s shared remains fixed by the #doter.

7. How much throughput can I expect on WiFi #dotdot? Do I still have throughput for myself if I'm connected to my #dot?

The maximum throughput of a #dot is currently 15 Mbps (Mega Bytes per second). To prevent the #dots from having too low a throughput, we limit the number of #dots per #dot to 3. Knowing that you can retrieve your e-mails at as little as 1 Mbps, watch a video on YouTube in SD at as little as 3 Mbps and a movie on Netflix in HD at as little as 7 Mbps, the #dotdot network speed is sufficient for many uses.

As the speed of a 4G or 5G connection is in the region of 50 to 150 Mbps, there’s usually enough bandwidth left on the #doter’s phone for sharing to go unnoticed on their phone.

8. Is #dotdot secure?

Yes, #dotdot is designed with safety in mind:
  • For the #doter: as the #dot is paired to the smartphone’s hotspot, sharing is just as secure as sharing a conventional connection.
  • For the #dotee: the #dotdot WiFi has WPA2-level encryption.

The #doteur and #dotee cannot exchange data with each other: each exchanges with the #dotdot cloud, which is the only trusted third party in the interaction (« zero trust » protocol).

9. What about my personal data? Can someone connect to my phone via my #dot and pretend to be me?

Each of the #doter and #dotee identify themselves with the #dotdot cloud to authenticate, but neither the #doter’s smartphone, the #dotee’s smartphone, nor even the #dot are trusted third parties. Only the cloud is trusted, so #dotdot benefits from one of the most secure clouds available today

Each user logs in using just his or her cell phone number, validated by a one-time password received by SMS. While we have no way of knowing your identity, we can uniquely link your certified mobile number with the amount in the transaction wallet and with the Stripe code enabling us to make transfers to you (if you are a #doter).

However, no one can « hide » behind my #dot: in compliance with anti-terrorism legislation and at the request of the police authorities, we will provide the phone number, location and IP address of the #dot in the #dotdot micro-network in the time slots requested.

10. How long does the battery last on the #dot device?

The #dot device has a buffer battery that provides 24 hours of continuous use. In intermittent use, i.e. around 1 to 2 hours a day, a #dot has a battery life of around ten days. It can be easily recharged via its USB-C plug.

11. How can I become a #doter?

To become a #doter, simply purchase a #dot and create an account on the #dotdot application, indicating the amount of GB’s you wish to share, and your availability.

12. How can I become a #dot and connect to a #dot?

As soon as you see a #dotdot network nearby, you can connect to it. You’ll be directed to the #dotdot application, where you can buy the MB’s or GB’s you need from your wallet, which you’ll have funded in advance. The amount in your wallet has no time limit. The amount actually billed to you is decided at the end of the connection, for whatever reason, according to the number of GB’s you have actually used.

13. How are users billed when they connect to my #dot? When and how do I get paid?

#dotees are billed at the end of the connection to a #doter’s #dot, only for the amount of data they have actually consumed.

The amount billed is credited to the #doter’s wallet, so the #doter can see that their connection has actually been shared.

On the 28th of each month, we draw up a statement and pay – usually on the 1st or 2nd of the following month – into the #doter’s account the amounts credited to their wallet since the 28th of the previous month.

14. Where can I buy a #dot and find out more about #dotdot?
